Disc Replacement for the Neck and Back: Restoring Motion, Height, and Balance
As a spine surgeon in Miami and New York, I spend a lot of time educating patients about why motion matters. The human spine is designed to move. When that motion is lost—whether from degeneration, collapse, or fusion—pain and dysfunction often follow. Disc replacement in the neck and back is a powerful motion-preserving solution that addresses the root cause of pain rather than simply locking the spine in place. Unlike fusion, disc replacement maintains movement at the treated level while restoring disc height and alignment.
Loss of disc height is one of the strongest predictors of chronic back and neck pain. When a disc collapses, nerves become compressed, posture changes, and surrounding muscles work harder just to keep the body upright. In my experience, restoring disc height correlates more consistently with pain relief than almost any other structural change we can make surgically. By restoring disc height, disc replacement also relieves pressure on nerves and facet joints while rebalancing the spine. This normalization of biomechanics reduces abnormal stress on adjacent levels—a major reason patients develop problems above or below a fusion years later.
Motion preservation is especially important in the cervical spine, where stiffness can significantly affect quality of life, driving, working, and sleeping. In the lumbar spine, maintaining motion allows patients to bend, twist, and stay active without accelerating degeneration elsewhere. My goal with disc replacement is not just to remove pain, but to restore function—so my patients in Miami and New York can move naturally, stay active, and avoid future surgeries whenever possible.
