Patients with Neck Pain
Neck pain is fairly common in everyday life, but it generally goes away. If you suffer an injury that involves the rapid, uncontrolled movement of your skull, such as in a car wreck, a fall or a sports hit, you may find that your neck discomfort severely limits your happiness and quality of life.
If you find that chronic pain in your neck and shoulders limits your ability to rest, work, relax or participate in activities you used to love, an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon can truly change your life. Until you’ve suffered from chronic pain, it’s hard to explain that the real suffering comes from the chronic part. It’s impossible to truly dig into anything with all of your focus. Part of your brain power must always be dealing with the pain. To get your focus back, an appointment with a spine doctor is well worth your time.
Patients with Back Pain
Chronic back pain will take a careful review by spine doctor Brusovanik. Depending on the origination of your pain, study of the condition will take time. Back pain can be caused by impinged nerves or seized muscles. Nerves impacted by herniated discs are fairly easy to trace, but seized muscles can arise from a variety of injuries and conditions.
Dr. Brusovanik will trace your pain to its source, request diagnostic imaging to determine the exact site origin of the pain, and make his recommendation for the most minimal repair method that will give you relief and return you to health.
Pain after Neck or Back Surgery
An orthopedic surgeon is one who focuses on healing the body by either operating on the musculoskeletal system, or by recommending therapies to bring about healing. A spine surgeon is an orthopedic surgeon who focuses specifically on the components of the spinal column that may be acting on the spinal cord and the nerves that branch off of it.
If you have undergone spinal surgery in the past and your pain has either come back, gotten worse, or stayed exactly the same, you may be a little gun-shy about undergoing the procedure again any time soon. Surgery is always a risk, and the decision to undergo it takes courage. It can also take a little desperation as you work to break free of your chronic pain.
Dr. Brusovanik is a spine surgeon who focuses on the best way to relieve your pain with the least amount of cutting. The deeper the surgery, the longer the recovery. If your first surgery failed and you’re willing to try again, know that Dr. Brusovanik will give you the odds, help you to choose the best option to relieve your pain, and do no more harm when you go back under the knife.
Disc Herniation
The term “slipped disc” is a misnomer; discs are an integral part of the spinal column and aren’t prone to move easily. The can bulge and press on a nerve, or they can herniate. What we think of as a disc is an outer coating, or annulus, filled with a rubbery center, or nucleus. A bulging disc maintains it’s integrity; that is, the nucleus is maintained within the annulus. A herniated disc refers to what happens when the disc nucleus slips through a gap in the annulus and presses on a nerve.
Not all herniated discs cause any symptoms. However, if you notice pain running down your arm or leg that feels sharp or hot, you may have a nerve that’s under pressure from a herniated disc. Some sufferers have no pain, but find that the extremity is numb or tingly. Over time, the limb can grow weaker. You might drop things, or stumble on an even surface.
Spondylolisthesis
Spondylolisthesis is a condition that occurs in the very bottom of the spine. At the base of your back, where the spine curves back at the flare of the buttocks, the L5 vertebra can move forward over the S1, putting strain on the spinal cord and compressing or rupturing the cartilage disc between these two vertebra.
Symptoms of the condition include pain, tightness in the low back or the buttocks, and pain down the legs. If the condition can’t be repaired or improved with physical therapy, surgery may be indicated.
No matter your history of spinal pain, surgery, or injury, help is available. Contact Miami Back & Neck Pain Specialists for a consultation and the chance to leave chronic pain behind you.
